ATHEN KARDASHIAN & NINA MHACH DURBAN

Duo Athen Kardashian and Nina Mach Durban are London born artists with a South Asian heritage. Both being raised by Indian mothers in the noughties, their work reflects their upbringing, illustrating how British culture and Indian heritage existed together in media they consumed during this time. Nostalgia plays a large role in their installations through trinkets such as beauty products, DVD cases and digital cameras. Their approach is quite lo-fi and tactile which is what spearheads the sentimental feel their work gives.

Their exhibition I’ll Wear The Bangles From Your
Hands
is a reflection of being surrounded by ephemera of Indian diaspora. From Bollywood movie posters to sticker books and passed down jewellery, this transportive exhibition creates a heartwarming representation of others who can relate to this amalgamation of growing up taking inspiration from all the areas of British Asian culture. Their aim was to highlight the intrigue of the glamour of Indian culture and how it is digested as a young girl in this “modern” environment.
