SIMON WHEATLEY

Wheatley is a London based photographer who gained attention during his documentation of Grime culture in the UK in the early 2000s. This was a pivotal era where African and Caribbean cultures informed this new scene for England. Along with the music, this time uncovered all the aspects of diaspora such as living situations, relationships with others and navigating your place as immigrants, or children of immigrants, in the UK.

Wheatley’s book Don’t Call Me Urban: The Time of Grime covers the these topics, celebrating the culture as well as bringing certain challenges people faced in these environments to light. While this genre was highly regarded and almost glamourised, he wanted to show that this culture was a whole lifestyle for some people with its own issues and hardships. The nature of the photography is raw and unfiltered to give a first hand perspective of the everyday lives of these individuals.
